Running "Find / -name "Packages.bz2" and for "Packages.gz" returns nothing, so these must not be on my system. It was setup automatically by the installer and I never saw the options to use one method or the other so I don't know. How's it set up in your case? Do it use a Packages file or the compressed files? Also could you post your sources.list? In the case of the online repos there are compressed Packages files (Packages.bz2 & Packages.gz) that apt should download when available. There's been a couple other topics recently where the Packages file was also missing, this thread for instance. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
